Matter Association determines whether Call Connector tries to find and link a matter, case, or project to each logged event.
When enabled, after finding a contact for an event, Call Connector searches your connected app for a related matter. If one is found, the call or message log is linked to it.
When disabled, the matter lookup is skipped entirely and logs are created without any matter association.
How matters affect logging depends on the app:
Smokeball: With a matter, calls are logged as Fees under that matter and SMS as Memos. Without a matter, both are logged as standalone Tasks.
Clio: The matter is included in the communication record. Without a matter, the communication is still created, just unlinked.
Filevine: Matters are required. If Matter Association is on and no matter is found, Call Connector will try to create one. If Matter Association is off, events can't be logged to Filevine at all.
For more app-specific behaviour, see the target app documentation.
This only affects whether Call Connector looks for and links matters. It doesn't affect contact lookup or any other part of the logging process.
